May

The Interpretation of Dreams

May appears as a compact but revealing time-marker in an analysis of a patient’s dream. The patient’s birth and marriage both took place in May; the month links personal dates to memories of childhood, courtship, and a letter that presented a happiness she did not in fact feel. Its significance lies less in the calendar itself than in the associations that make an apparently ordinary detail matter.

May in the Patient’s Recollections

The patient recalls that the same year she collected butterflies, the region suffered a severe May-beetle infestation. Children killed the beetles, and she remembered seeing a man remove their wings and eat their bodies. These recollections belong to a wider set of memories in which childhood conduct contrasts with her adult tenderness: she had also once pulled wings from beetles and butterflies, an action she would later find horrifying.

May connects those early memories to adult milestones. The patient was born in May and married in May. Three days after the wedding, she wrote to her parents that she was happy, though the account notes that she was not happy at all. The dated letter therefore preserves a mismatch between the statement she sent and her actual state, making a seemingly straightforward record part of the dream’s more complicated chain of associations.

The Month as Associative Material

The analysis does not treat May as an independent explanation of the dream. Rather, the month gathers together distinct strands of the patient’s history: the childhood episode with the beetles, her birth, her marriage, and the letter written just after the wedding. The force of the detail comes from that convergence, not from any claim that May carries a fixed meaning by itself.

This associative method is consistent with the book’s broader account of dream interpretation. A dream’s details, even slight ones, may be indispensable when followed through the recollections and verbal material connected to them. May consequently marks a point where a calendar fact opens onto remembered experience and a discrepancy between outward wording and private feeling. It illustrates how a small chronological detail can become significant when placed within a network of personal associations.
